Driving a Sustainable Tomorrow: Mobilising Employees’ Pro-Environmental Behaviour through GHRM Practices
The increasing urgency of environmental sustainability has transformed the role of human resource management from a traditional administrative function into a strategic driver of organizational sustainability. Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) has emerged as a comprehensive approach that integrates environmentally responsible practices into recruitment, training, performance management, rewards, employee involvement, and organizational culture. This paper examines how GHRM practices stimulate employees' pro-environmental behaviour and contribute to sustainable organizational performance. It explores the mechanisms through which environmentally oriented HR policies influence employees' environmental awareness, motivation, commitment, and voluntary green actions within the workplace. The study further presents an integrated conceptual framework illustrating the relationships among GHRM practices, psychological and organizational mediators, employees' pro-environmental behaviour, and sustainability outcomes. By synthesizing contemporary theoretical perspectives and recent empirical evidence, the paper provides insights into the strategic importance of aligning human resource practices with environmental objectives. The findings are expected to assist managers, policymakers, and researchers in developing effective employee-centred sustainability strategies that strengthen environmental responsibility, improve organizational resilience, and support long-term sustainable development across diverse industrial sectors.
