Emotional Manipulation in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in consumer-machine interaction has raised critical questions about the influence of AI on consumer emotions. While AI has the potential to enhance consumer experiences and improve emotional well-being, it also poses significant risks of emotional manipulation and exploitation. The present study is an attempt to provide a critical examination of the influence of AI on consumer emotions, focusing on how AI-powered technologies can influence emotional states, manipulate emotional responses, and exploit emotional vulnerabilities. Using a mixed-methods approach combining survey research, interviews, and content analysis, this study investigates the emotional consequences of AI-driven consumer interactions, including the effects of AI-powered advertising, social media, and customer service on consumer emotional experiences. The findings of this study highlight the need for greater awareness and regulation of AI-powered emotional manipulation and provide insights for consumers, marketers, and policymakers seeking to promote more ethical and responsible uses of AI in consumer-facing contexts. It is essential to have transparency over systems and algorithms, rules and public awareness to know the ill effects of AI. Overall, the study will contribute to the overall work of the research on the manipulation of AI and its impact on human beings.
